On this day in Horror History, Jaws made its theatrical debut. Opening on 409 Screens across the United States, in a mere 78 days it would become the highest grossing film of all that preceded it. Considered to be one of the most quintessential motion pictures of the last century, Steven Spielberg embedded an ever-present terror into the minds of movie goers worldwide.

On this day in Horror History, Sherman Howard was born. Considered by George Romero to be one of the most definitive and brilliant zombie actors of all time, Howard’s role as ‘Bub’ in the classic zombie film Day of the Dead (1985) has made the character that he epitomized one of the most recognizable and beloved of the zombie genre. A talent that has blessed many of cult films, television shows and animated series that allowed him to show a prowess for voice acting, Howard is and will always be one of the greatest minds that has blessed the horror industry.

"How Batman and Christopher Nolan saved the Friday the 13th franchise, for now…

One of the biggest hold-ups to a sequel to the 2009 remake of Friday the 13th was that there were just too many hands in the pot. Just yesterday I was talking with a few colleagues about how we won’t see the return of Jason Voorhees until someone lets up – whether it be Paramount or New Line/Warner Bros. Pictures. After years of fan tears, breaking news comes out of the Hollywood Reporter who writes that Paramount Pictures has officially landed the franchise rights, which also include Jason Voorhees and his likeness. This is major news as we should expect a sequel to get back on fast-track immediately. 

When Paramount and Warner Bros. teamed up on Christopher Nolan’s latest movie project, Interstellar, in January, some wondered how Warners made its way on board a project set up at a rival studio…

Now, months later, THR has learned more about the price that Warners had to pay in exchange for half the Nolan project. The cast of characters includes Friday the 13th villain Jason Voorhees as well as the foul-mouthed kids from “South Park” (bonus news!).

Warners, which released Nolan’s megagrossing Batman movies and maintains an overall deal with his Syncopy label, wanted in on Interstellar so badly it gave Paramount its rights to co-finance the next Friday the 13th horror film as well as its portion of a future “South Park” movie. Also part of the deal was an agreement to let Paramount co-finance a to-be-determined A-list Warners property.
Warner Bros. and Paramount declined to comment on the arrangement. 

So you’re completely up to speed, here’s a recap of how we got to today…

The original Friday was made in 1980 by producer Sean Cunningham with investments from Boston theater owners. Paramount got domestic distribution rights; Warners had international. Eventually, the rights reverted back to Cunningham, who took them to New Line Cinema in the 1990s as part of an attempt to jumpstart a Freddy vs. Jason movie (with the villain from A Nightmare on Elm Street). That process took more than 10 years, and in the meantime, New Line made two other Friday the 13th movies (using the character in the title; Jason Goes To Hell and Jason X).

When it came time for New Line, now part of Warner Bros., to develop a Friday remake/reboot, it was revealed that Paramount had certain rights to the original and had to be brought in as 50-50 partners. Michael Bay’s Platinum Dunes ended up producing 2009′s Friday the 13th, which grossed a respectable $91 million for Paramount and Warners on a budget of less than $20 million. 

Efforts to launch a sequel to the rebooted Friday as well as a second “South Park” movie were complicated due to both studios having a share in them. So Warners decided to sacrifice Jason and Cartman for a deal on Nolan’s Interstellar, thus maintaining its relationship with the filmmaker and snagging a piece of what could be another Inception.

In the process, risk-averse Paramount got a partner on a pricey sci-fi tentpole in addition to the ability to make another movie based on one of the most successful horror franchises of all time and an animation juggernaut.

However, there is a catch: Sources say Paramount only enjoys the rights for both titles for the next five years and has that amount of time to make follow-up movies.

 The film is scheduled for a September 6, 2013 release.

Yesterday In Horror History

May 11, 2007
On this day in Horror History, 28 Weeks Later made it’s theatrical debut. The adored sequel to 28 Days Later (2002), it takes place 6 months after the rage virus decimated London. Although a third installment titled “28 Months Later” from Director Danny Boyle has been rumored, it has been discounted because rights to the franchise are frozen between several individuals who are no longer on speaking terms. Until then, the ’07 release from Juan Carlos Fresnadillo will remain as the close to the infection film franchise that has solidified its place in horror history.

“We are headed for the green-zone, our area of security and reconstruction, designated as District One. District One is located on the Isle of Dogs. Although the Isle of Dogs is completely safe, the surrounding area of London is not. There are a large number of bodies still left to be cleared from the original outbreak of infection. Rats and wild dogs are prevalent, as is disease. New arrivals are reminded, for their own safety, it is absolutely forbidden to cross the river and leave the security zone. You will be joining 15,000 civilians who are already resident in District One. As we approach your new home, you will notice a dramatically increased military presence. The U.S. Army is responsible for your safety. We will do everything we can do to make your repatriation as easy as possible. Inside District One, however, we believe you'll be pleasantly surprised. May 12, 1988
On this day in the Friday the 13th timeline, Tommy Jarvis is released from an institution and returns to the town formally known as Crystal Lake to dig up Jason Voorhees and cremate him. Upon seeing the body of the machete wielding maniac, Tommy loses control and stabs Jason with a fence post out of anger, ultimately bringing him back to life when the object is struck by lightning. April 18, 1972
On this day in Horror History, Eli Roth was born. A brilliant film-maker in every sense of the word, Roth has thrust himself into infamy in less than a decade, even garnering the title as one of the most prominent “Splat Pack” members. With such films as Cabin Fever (2002), Hostel: Part I (2005), and Hostel: Part II (2007), Roth’s career has proven nothing but box office successes. Early whilst funding his film projects, Roth would work as an on-line sex operator for Penthouse magazine, where he would have sex online with unbeknownst patrons who would pay by the hour to indulge in fantasies with gorgeous Penthouse models. From peculiar beginnings spawned greatness, as the early funding of films and the low budget vein that Roth’s talent embraced also bred its own unique visceral style, as well as becoming some of the highest grossing horror films since his directorial debut. Roth is always executive producer and director of the pilot episode of the new Netlfix series "Hemlock Grove" premiering this Friday.

On this day in Horror History, Olivia Hussey was born. A horror starlet that has lent her beauty and talent to Black Christmas (1974) and Stephen King’s IT (1990), the veteran actress of Argentina descent has stunned audiences for nearly half a century. In her break-out role as Juliet in the classic Franco Zeffirelli film adaption of the Shakespeare play, she would captivate movie goers and spawn an illustrious career. It was after the release of that film, that Hussey would ultimately find herself in one of the most peculiar of circumstances ever experienced by any actress, as she was unable to legally view the premier of Romeo and Juliet (1968) in London because she was under the age of 18 and the film had a nude scene.. Regardless that she was the one nude in the film.

Zombieland... The TV Series?

So I was surfing Bloody Disgusting earlier and saw that Amazon Studios (at amazon.com) is making a "Zombieland" TV show (which is supposed to be a sequel to the film from 2009 by Columbia Pictures).


While I don't know much here is what I can tell you:

• It will be made by amazon studios.
• There is only a pilot episode so far.
• You MUST be an amazon prime user to view for free
• Amazon prime users will be able to view the pilot episode and deiced it's future based on reviews.

Synopsis/ General info on the show:  
The show is based on the hit Columbia Pictures movie of the same name, and finds four survivors outwitting zombies and searching for a place to call home. The Zombieland pilot comes from the feature film’s original creative team, writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick (G.I. Joe: Retaliation, The Joe Schmo Show), and producer Gavin Polone (Gilmore Girls, Curb Your Enthusiasm). Eli Craig (Tucker and Dale vs. Evil) is directing the pilot. The part of Tallahassee is played by Kirk Ward (The Island), Maiara Walsh (Desperate Housewives, Switched at Birth,) is Wichita, Tyler Ross (Milkshake) is Columbus, and Izabela Vidovic has the role of Little Rock. - Bloody Disgusting.

On this day in Horror History, Charles Spencer Chaplin was born. One of the most pivotal actors in the infancy of cinema, the silent film star has inspired countless talented people in the movie industry. The first actor ever to be featured on the cover of Time Magazine in 1925, Chaplin’s global notoriety thrust him before the eyes of some of the most influential historical figures in living history. Not all for the better, it is rumored that the beloved star would inspire the toothbrush mustache adorned by Adolf Hitler, as the dictator’s goal was to harness the global appeal of Chaplin, regardless of his disdain for the Switzerland born icon whom he incorrectly believed to be a Jew. April 10, 1991
On this day in Horror History Kevin Peter Hall passed away. At 7' 2½", the gentle giant was famed for his roles as the antagonist in Predator (1987) as well as Harry the Sasquatch in the classic television series Harry and the Hendersons. After a devastating car accident in Los Angeles, the blood transfusion that saved his life would be in vain, as the kind hearted and talented actor would contract AIDS and pass shortly thereafter. Hall will forever live on in our hearts and our memories… For the laughs he gave us, and the chills he sent down our spine. RIP Kevin Peter Hall.

“When I first came to California it was fun and exciting to get any part in any movie and get paid for it. Because of my size and my background it seemed like I was right for just about anything. I did go through a period where I thought it was time to give up monster movies. But then the scripts and the effects started getting better. I was treated better and starting getting paid more. Doing creatures these days is more of a job for me than it was in the beginning. In the early days I was creating these creatures and basically getting lost in them. Now with creatures like Harry and the Predator it's more a matter of getting deeper into their characters and making sure they work.” -Kevin Peter Hall

It's all types of things, gory, scary, amazing!


Fede Alvarez said that he wanted a film that shocked people... and he delivered.


I am happy that the "God Father's" Bruce Campbell and Sam Raimi stood behind the film 110%

I want to see it again. It was an amazing amazing movie!!

Today in Horror History April 6th- April 9th

Sorry I havn't been on much lately.

I've been doing stuff and things (haha) with the family.

So here are Horror History's for April 6th- today (the 9th.)


April 6, 1955
On this day in Horror History, Michael Rooker was born. Moving from his home town of Jasper Alabama to Chicago when his parents divorced at age 13, Rooker’s career would bloom after his acclaimed role as the title character in Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer (1986). At a time Michael was doing custodial work to pay the bills, while still in his overalls the aspiring actor would audition for the lead role, and ultimately give one of the most powerful performances in cinematic history. Even in the midst of the success after a 4 year delay on the release of his acting debut, and it being one of the few films that ultimately forced the MPAA to create the NC-17 rating, Rooker would find himself frequenting antagonists in film. This typecast hasn’t shined through his incredible talent, as many of roles have shown dexterity that has brought him before the eyes of horror fans for several decades.

Recently, Rooker epitomized the role of Merle Dixon on AMC’s The Walking Dead. A loving husband and father, Rooker couldn’t be further from the villainous characters which we love to hate.

On this day in Horror History Francis Ford Coppola was born. Undeniably one of the most prolific film makers of all time, Coppola is behind such classics as Dementia 13 (1963), THX 1138 (1971), The Godfather (1972), Apocalypse Now (1979), Bram Stoker’s Dracula (1992), and countless other cult films sprawling across the better half of a century. One of only seven Directors who have won Best Picture, Best Director and Best Screenplay (Original/Adapted) for the same film, Coppola is a unique and visionary talent in the industry.

On this day in Horror History, Kane Hodder was born. Most notable as the man behind the hockey mask of Jason Voorhees, Hodder is a veteran actor and stuntman who has lent his art to countless horror films. Also the character actor behind the disfigured antagonist in the acclaimed Hatchet films, Kane has shocked audiences for years being the only one to have worn Freddy Krueger’s bladed glove at the end of Jason Goes to Hell: The Final Friday (1993), done stunts as Leatherface in Leatherface: Texas Chainsaw Massacre III (1990) and reprised the role of the machete wielding maniac that we’ve all grown to love.

On this day in Horror History Shaun of the Dead made it’s theatrical debut in the UK. Less than 10 years old, the zombie comedy starring Simon Pegg and Nick Frost has thrust itself into cult infamy. A box office success, the film following two dull witted friends in the zombie apocalypse has been celebrated by some of the biggest names in the industry including George Romero, and even Quentin Tarantino who dubbed it one of the top 20 movies since 1992. Also marking a monumental moment in cinema, it was the film which broadened the notoriety of director Edgar Howard Wright, who would ultimately go on to direct Hot Fuzz (2007), Scott Pilgrim vs. the World (2010), and the upcoming release of The World’s End (2013). Forever a staple of the zombie genre, few films will ever come close to the perfection of Shaun of the Dead.

A giant in horror cinema, the Detroit native who started with aspirations of being an engineer while studying at Stanford would go on to become one of the most prolific and celebrated film-makers of all time. As a Producer, Director and Writer of more than 400 Motion Pictures, Corman’s legacy has given the world the most incredibly eclectic and notorious movies of the horror genre. Everything from The Terror (1963) and The Little Shop of Horrrors (1960) to Sharktopus (2012), Corman has perfected film production with a savvy and brilliance that is envied among those in the industry. Author of ‘How I Made A Hundred Movies In Hollywood And Never Lost A Dime’, he has proven that his method of practical effects and approach to the medium which he has become iconic, is not only responsible for one of the most dynamic catalogues in the history of the silver screen but is a catalyst for some of the biggest names of today.

Today In Horror History

April 4, 1979
On this day in Horror History, Heath Andrew Ledger was born. An inspiring talent in the industry, the young actor had epitomized many of roles in his short life. Born in Perth Australia, Ledger would go on to star in such films as The Order (2003), The Brothers Grimm (2005), and The Dark Knight (2008). It was his leading role as the Joker in the Christopher Nolan Batman reimaging that would ultimately become his most sinister and tolling ever, one that is rumored to have weighed very heavily on the late actor. His final gift to cinema would be that of Tony in The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus (2009). Production halted after his passing, and in an ode to the budding talent and legacy of Ledger, friends Johnny Depp, Jude Law and Colin Farrell completed the film playing the same role but under the premise that Tony’s appearance changed in every different imaginary world present in the movie.

On January 22, 2008 the world would be in tears as Ledger was taken from us after an accidental overdose of prescription medication while at his apartment in New York City. Heaven received another angel that sordid day. Missed but not forgotten, Ledger will live on in memory, and a legacy that will not be forgotten.
