Today In Horror History

March 2, 1985
On this day in Horror History, Ghoulies made it’s theatrical debut. The cult favorite directed by Luca Bercovici has often been considered to be a knock off of Gremlins (1984), but to any of the film’s undying fans it is a spark of brilliance in the wake of the peculiar monsters to come out of the decade. Followed by several sequels that would never quite hold a candle to the ’85 classic, Ghoulies has become a staple in the horror genre for is strangely superb acting in the midst of such campy comedy.

“They call me Dick, but you can call me... Dick.” –Dick

Part 2:
March 2, 2004
On this day in Horror History, Mercedes McCambridge passed away. A renowned radio personality, she would eventually take cinema by storm with her beauty and domineering voice. Often cast in the role of villainous and cruelly-disposed women, she would inevitably lend her talents to a pivotal moment in horror history as the voice over actress for Regan MacNeil while possessed by the demon in The Exorcist (1973). The foul mouthed and sinister tongues spoken by the actress would aid in the film becoming one of the most terrifying of all time, and would result in the need for an appeal to the Screen Actors Guild in order to see her name credited in the classic horror film which was omitted by director William Friedkin.

“One of the most destructive things in my life was the kind of parts I played in pictures. I studied Shakespeare and the classics, and I end up shooting Joan Crawford and killing a horse that Elizabeth Taylor was in love with. I'm serious. I played the worst harridans, the most hard-bitten women, the absolute heavies, and it just about did me in.” - Mercedes McCambridge
